Polymers are used throughout the automotive industry in areas such as the fuel and braking systems, electrical components, and upholstery on the interior of a vehicle. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with infrared spectroscopy (TG-IR) is a technique which allows users to measure the thermal degradation of a material while simultaneously measuring the evolved gases. This application note describes the analysis of the inner sheath of an insulating cable used in the automotive industry using TG-IR. This provides in depth information about the sample which would not be achievable with other techniques or would require extensive sample preparation
