Environmental

Elements can enter the environment through a variety of different sources, both natural and anthropogenic in origin. Through both processes, the leaching and release of toxic metals into the environment can have devastating effects on surrounding ecosystems. Since ecological fate and toxicity is often linked to the chemical form of the element, studies discerning between various chemical species in environmental matrices have become increasingly important in the development of new environmental legislation. Since potable water is derived from surface and ground waters, many countries require that the chemical species of analytes such as chromium, arsenic, etc. to be known prior to distribution, thereby ensuring their fitness for human consumption.

If you work in a water or environmental testing laboratory, it is highly likely that you have received requests for elemental speciation and are aware of their regulatory relevance. Activate your business today and expand your analytical portfolio to include HPLC-ICP-MS.

Typical Environmental Applications:

  • Chromium speciation in environmental and drinking waters
  • Chromium speciation in sludge, soils and sediments
  • Arsenic speciation in surface, ground, and drinking waters
  • Chromium, arsenic and lead species in air

Food/Biomonitoring

Nutrients often enter the food chain via plants, which take in elements from the surrounding environment, and are assimilated by higher trophic levels through diet. Although micro- and macro- nutrients are required for human health, in some cases, low concentrations of certain chemical species can cause acute or chronically toxic effects. Consequently, a number of regulations are starting to include the evaluation of the chemical species in their assessment of certain elements in food, which are known to cause a toxicological response in humans.

If your research is focused around food safety or food biofortification, the assessment of the chemical species of elements in food stocks can greatly assist in determining suitability for consumption, adding an extra dimension to your food analysis portfolio.

Typical Food Applications:

  • Arsenic speciation in food and beverages
  • Mercury speciation in seafood
  • Tin speciation in seafood
  • Selenium speciation in biofortified plants
  • Iodine in seaweed

Pharma/Nutraceutical

Ensuring that drugs, drug products and dietary supplements are safe for use, and that their interaction with other compounds can be predicted, is essential to the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical business. A number of metal(loid)s can enter pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals from the raw material or during the manufacturing process, and it is through the determination and quantification of the appropriate chemical species that we are able to determine suitability for use and predict metabolic pathways.

Typical Pharma/Nutraceutical Applications:

  • Chromium, mercury and arsenic species in tablets
  • Selenium speciation in selenium supplements

Consumer Products

In recent years, concerns over a number of different toxic metal species present in toys, paints and other consumer products have been raised. The presence of these metals generally arises from the use of different compounds and elements as pigments, providing color to the item of interest. Hazardous compounds are also used extensively in industries such as wood and paper processing, agricultural products and the metal industry. HPLC-ICP-MS can determine whether the chemical in your product is bioavailable and/or toxic.

Typical Consumer Product Applications:

  • Chromium speciation in toys
  • Arsenic and lead speciation in paint
  • Lead species in ammunition and ammunition testing facilities
